SMART disk failure detection paper from goog

Slashdot | Google Releases Paper on Disk Reliability

Quick scan basically says you can't find half the drives that are about to fail from SMART values alone. SMART is useful for finding some drives that are failing (or at least dell will replace them if their own diagnostics think the smart values are bad too) but is not the be-all-end-all.
